Biblical Timeline
Context:
7 or 12 weeks long Bible Study for adults or children:
Weeks 1-7: Sections of the Bible (Pentateuch, Gospel, etc.)
Weeks 1-12: Centuries of the Bible (8th c B.C.E. to 2nd c C.E.)
General Information:
The first half of my presentation goes through the books in Canonical Order, from Genesis to Revelation.
The second half of my presentation can be read through the centuries that the books were written.
Automatically, it will start with the 8th century, B.C.E. and end with the 2nd century, C.E. Though, you can click through any of the centuries to explore which books were written in those centuries. If a book gave a range, I usually chose a middle century to place that book on the timeline.
I imagine this presentation being used for any age group as long as it is adjusted for the age, though it is written in fairly easy-to-understand terms.
What I learned:
Through this project, I have learned many things about the Bible and the themes and authorship of the different books. I believe the most interesting would be that some of our books, like Obadiah and 2nd Timothy, are completely unknown about their authors. And some, we don’t know their context. And in other books, like Haggai, we know specific months of the author’s work. It made me more interested in how our canon was chosen and what books didn’t make it into the text we read today. Additionally, it helped me see how much information is out there about our Bible and who wrote it for what purpose and at which time, we just have to look for it. I am so excited to have a resource that pulls all that information into one place and I am interested in distributing it somehow for people to use. My next steps would be to write lesson plans or a brief Bible Study Outline as a way of working through the whole project in a Congregational Context. I plan on using this project in any ministry I am called to in the future, not only because of the time and energy put into it but because I think it is important that our congregations understand the timeline of the Bible and the general information about each book.
